Benjamin West’s The Death of a Stag, a tour de force of pictorial theater and his own unique Scottish masterpiece, has been the focus of high drama for over two centuries. Painted for the Clan Mackenzie in 1786, the gigantic canvas, measuring twelve by seventeen feet, is still the largest in the collection of the National Galleries of Scotland. The painting almost moved to America, but after a successful campaign, it was purchased in 1987. In 2004, the work was conserved in situ in the National Gallery of Scotland and this book tells the story of the picture, both in terms of its history and the conservation process.
The National Galleries Barberini and Corsini contain paintings and sculptures of exceptional historical and artistic value. Page after page, through the masterpieces of many of the greatest Italian artists from the Middle Ages to the 18th century (Angelico, Raphael, Piero di Cosimo, Bronzino, Lotto, Tintoretto, Cortona, Caravaggio, Bernini, Reni, Guercino, Batoni, Canaletto) the reader can follow the development of art history. The collections also include artwork by Holbein, Murille and Van Dyck, besides a few antique pieces. His portrait of Lady Agnew was painted in London but has found its definitive home in Edinburgh. The Humayun’s Tomb-Nizamuddin area is inhabited by a vibrant local community being visited by millions of tourists and pilgrims each year. Conservation works being undertaken on the monuments in this area have aimed to re-define standard conservation practice in India by setting benchmarks in using a craft-based approach, setting documentation standards, using a participatory and multi-disciplinary approach, and using the conservation initiative as a tool towards improving quality of life for local communities.
This book aims to inform the general public about the discipline of conservation and the rationale behind the successful conservation initiative and makes an argument for change in conservation approach in India: from isolated monuments to an urban approach that includes concern for the setting; from a ‘tender-based’ approach to a quality-concerned method; amongst other factors.

October 21, 1982. Three singers stand on the steps of the High Court with large cheques and broken dreams. The women are Annie (Annabel Leventon, the book’s author), GB (Gaye Brown), and Di-Di (Diane Langton). This delightful manuscript, published in facsimile, was composed around 1585 by a clergyman in a bid for the patronage of an Elizabethan magnate, Sir John Petre. Modeled on printed writing books, German and French, it presents a profusion of scripts, accompanying decorated capital letters from A to Z. Its texts are eloquent on the value of learning. A tour de force of a carver’s skill and craftsmanship, the Farnese Cup is the largest cameo hardstone cup to have survived from the ancient world. Thought to be made in Hellenist Egypt sometime between 300 BC and 30 BC, the Cup was not an archaeological find but rather a treasured piece that traveled over centuries through many hands from Alexandria to Rome to Constantinople and back to Rome before joining the Farnese Collection now housed at the National Archeological Museum of Naples. Why was it made? And in what context? The 114th issue of JA is the first monograph devoted to Hiroshi Nakamura & NAP and features 31 projects since its founding in 2002. From an early age, Nakamura was impressed with how architecture takes shape by building connections between various elements – local history and tradition, materials and craftsmanship, and human lives and philosophies. This led to a design process that seeks to foster better relationships among people, between people and the local community, and people and nature. He achieves this through an analysis of climate, local industry, and landscape to create designs that connect with the behaviors and emotions of the inhabitants. This results in complex forms as in the housing project Dancing Trees, Singing Birds where existing trees are retained and become part of the design. In the Sayama Lakeside Cemetery project, serene interiors and views of the surrounding landscape create a peaceful location for visitors to remember their loved ones. Text in English and Japanese.

is the first monograph from Keith Williams, a partner, along with Mario Nievera, of Nievera Williams Design – one of the country’s leading landscape architectural firms. Based in South Florida, Williams has been designing sumptuous outdoor spaces for over 20 years.
In this book, Williams highlights his most impressive projects to date which includes the revitalization of several historically landmarked homes and properties. He often integrates both native and exotic plants, builds opulent swimming pools, and brings in mature trees and stone work, all of which result in stunning gardens that are brimming with lush, tropical foliage.
