Full Description

The last 90 years have been a glorious period in Himalayan exploration. As elite climbers from across the globe have attempted to discover the Himalaya, the Himalayan Club, founded in 1928, has played a pioneering role in chronicling their expeditions for posterity. Maps of these expeditions, preserved by the Himalayan Journal, comprise a historical treasure. Legendary explorations like Shipton and Tilman’s route into Nanda Devi Sanctuary, Maurice Herzog’s Annapurna ascent the first to scale a peak over 26,300 feet and Sir Chris Bonington’s exploration of routes to Menluntse continue to arouse fascination. More recently, Harish Kapadia completed a century-old quest to track the route of the Brahmaputra River; Group Capt. V. K. Sashindran has explored the unknown Kunzang Valley; and A.V. Saunders attempted the ascent of Panch Chuli, ending in one of the most dramatic mountain rescues ever to succeed at such altitudes. All are included in this volume. With some of the routes and climbs documented here yet to be repeated, these important maps are accompanied by texts from the adventurers who drew them. Taken together, they are a tribute to the rich history of modern engagement with the world’s most challenging mountain range. Contents: Kashmir – East Karakoram; Karakoram; Himachal Pradesh; Uttarakhand; Nepal – Tibet; Sikkim – Arunachal Pradesh – Bhutan.
