The role brickwork plays as a cladding and the moments where it is stretched emphasize this point. But the stretcher courses of the typical wall conditions render the role brick plays most explicit. As Hans Kollhoff observed, with the economic and thermal demands made on contemporary construction, it would be inconceivable to make a brick wall in any other way, at least in the case of normative buildings. Text in English and German.
- Architectural character of an apartment building in Zurich
Full Description
A master builder was the client for this apartment building on the corner of Oberwiesenstrasse and Binzmühlestrasse in Zurich. That situation gives the architecture its character of simple, often accomplished elegance and a solidity of structures that used to be erected by building company workshops in the spirit of an ‘architecture without architects’.
Text in English and German.
