WOLF – St Peter’s Abbey, Belgium

17 May — 18 Aug 2024

The internationally acclaimed documentary photographer Frederik Buyckx trekked through desolate mountain landscapes, like a lone wolf.

In places where man and nature still live in symbiosis, the photographer went in search of the tension between breathtaking beauty and danger. Overwhelmed by its dazzling splendour, Frederik Buyckx learned how to deal with nature’s extremes and its omnipotence – and the fear they invoke.

His images document the discoveries he made during his personal journey to remote terrains.  What if the crux of human existence is not comfort but freedom?

Buyckx’s photographs bear witness to an austere lifestyle, but also to an inherent sense of peace and wellbeing. His vision forms a magical link to his childhood. The exhibition is a poetic throwback to Buyckx’s youth…

“I wanted to reconnect with nature in every possible respect and to experience its power. Isolation is the key to getting as close to this experience as possible.
People only start using their senses when they are at their most vulnerable.
This is the point at which primal instinct takes over…”

Frederik Buyckx

WOLF highlights the beauty and terror of nature. Its majesty is only truly visible when we slow down and focus on the details. It is all about freedom. Visitors to the exhibition are fellow travellers on this intense journey that is filled with unexpected discoveries. Leave the hustle and bustle behind and commune with nature. Buyckx’s images will sharpen your senses.
