Artemisia
Heroine of art
From March 19, 2025
In 2025, the Jacquemart-André Museum is honoring the Roman artist Artemisia Gentileschi (1593 – circa 1656). A personality with an extraordinary destiny, this protagonist of Caravaggio painting is one of the rare female artists of the modern era to have achieved international fame during her lifetime and who was able to make a living from her painting. Through some forty paintings, bringing together recognized masterpieces by the artist, recently attributed canvases, or paintings rarely shown outside their usual place of conservation, this exhibition highlights the role of Artemisia Gentileschi in the history of 17th-century art.
The exhibition aims in particular to demonstrate the profound originality of her work, her career and her identity, which remain a source of inspiration and fascination to this day. Artemisia’s story spans the centuries, and the reading that can be made of her work – a reflection of her experience and resilience – proves to be timeless and universal.
