Théo Tobiasse
50 Years of Painting. Catalogue Raisonné
- Two volume box set, presenting the complete work of Théo Tobiasse, a French artist born in 1927 in Jaffa in Israel, and died in 2012 in Cagnes-sur-Mer
“Tobiasse paints objects, situations and dreams, as well as places, myths and legends and real or imaginary beings… With intensity, precision and lyricism and with full awareness, he paints the great river of creation that flows through him. He paints his desires and passions, he paints rumours, laughter and whispers. He gives them body and life, incarnation and reality. To make a long story short, Tobiasse paints the world as it lives and breathes; he describes it, allowing us to experience, relive and share everything that his eyes, memory, hands and paintbrushes have gleaned from the chaos. (…) . In his works, time is condensed, bringing together both the real and the supernatural and creating a dual relationship with the territory; a territory that, on the one hand, has a tangible geometry that includes Paris and Venice, as well as Saint-Paul, Jerusalem, Kovno and New York, and, on the other, is an imaginary land encompassing the entire world: it is the homeland of joy, exuberant nature and love, to which he is transported by all the desires and dreams.”
