Full Description

In line with the works on decorators of the 1940s, ’50s, ’60s, and ’70s, this book plunges us into the world of ’80s and ’90s. These have witnessed unprecedented experiments in the world of design and architecture. Composed of a rich introduction which gives a synoptic vision and 38 monographs that describe its many faces, this book makes and exceptionally creative period intelligible, and reveals through an abundant iconography, often unpublished, its formidable aesthetic richness.

A new generation of designers stands out; among them Shiro Kuramata, Philippe Starck, Ron Arad, Bob Wilson, Elizabeth Garouste and Mattia Bonetti. All regenerate creation by refusing the elitism of their predecessors and by favouring the use of new materials. Some turn to recovery, such as the Creative Salvage group, and offer inventive and provocative furniture thanks to welding and assembly. Others, gathered in Italy around Ettore Sottsass and Memphis, combine unexpected colours and patterns to the playful use of plastic laminate. Sliding until the end of the ’90s, the achievements presented in this book mark the desire for a dialogue between artistic references with a new relationship to the industrial aspect, at the dawn of the 21st century and its technological innovations.

About the Author

Doctor of art history, Patrick Favardin (1951-2016) devoted himself for many years to the organisation of exhibitions for the City of Paris. He published numerous articles and books on what became his favourite subject, Le Style 50, a moment in French art, published by Éditions Sous le Vent/Vilo, in 1987, and Les Années 50 at Éditions du Chêne, in 1999. He is also the author of Decorators of the '50s, in 2002, and Decorators from the '60s and '70s, in 2015, both published by Éditions Norma. He also directed for 20 years the gallery of art À Rebours, dedicated to French decorators and ceramists of the '50s and '60s.

Journalist, Guy Bloch-Champfort has always been interested in decorative arts and contemporary creation. He has published in 2002 Raphaël, decorator at Éditions de l’Amateur, a successful monograph which led to the rediscovery of this important creator. Collaborator of many French and international magazines for the visual arts, decorative art, architecture and design, from the beginning of the 20th century to the present day, he is quite naturally interested in decoration of the '80s and '90s, which made coexist, like no other period, contemporary creations and influence past centuries.
