    About the Author

Ángel Botello was a Spanish painter known for his use of vibrant colours and depictions of island life and people in Haiti, Cuba, the Dominican Republic, and Puerto Rico. He became a pioneer of the local art scene in Puerto Rico by opening one of the first art galleries on the island. It is there that he developed his signature figurative and surrealistic style, inspired by his encounter with the tropical light and bright colours of Puerto Rico. The eponymous “Botellian” style came to refer to the artist’s caricatured approach to the human figure.
