Ernst Scheidegger – Kunsthaus Zürich, Switzerland

27 Oct — 21 Jan 2024

The Kunsthaus Zurich honors with “Ernst Scheidegger. Photographer” one of the most important Swiss photographers of the 20th century. On the occasion of his 100th birthday, the surprising, lesser-known work of the former Magnum photographer and companion of many artists can now be discovered: including reports and portraits of important personalities from the art world.

80 black and white photographs from the 1940s to the mid-1980s

Ernst Scheidegger (1923–2016) was not only one of the most important Swiss photographers of the 20th century and was closely associated with the Kunsthaus Zurich and the Alberto Giacometti Foundation. He was also an artist, publisher and gallery owner. After a major exhibition at the Kunsthaus Zurich in 1992, which honored all these aspects of his work, this time the focus is on the photographer Scheidegger. There are a number of early, mostly unpublished photographs to be discovered, as well as a selection of important photographs that Scheidegger took of artists of his time: Joan Miró, Hans Arp, Max Bill, Germaine Richier, Alberto Giacometti and others.
